Utrecht Centraal Station is the largest and busiest railway station in the Netherlands, with sixteen platforms and more than 176,000 passengers per day. Its central location makes it the largest junction station in the Netherlands, and disruption badly affects the country's whole railway network.
Severe condensation on the ceilings was causing major disturbance, with areas of the station having to be closed off. The worst affected areas are covered with ceramic tiles which will promote heavy condensation in the right circumstances.
Our advice was to coat approximately 900 m2 of the ceilings with ThermalDry Anti-Condensation Coating, which is both thermally insulating and water repelling.
ThermalDry increases the wall temperature, preventing the formation of condensation and mould growth.
There are electrical conduits, switches and sockets carried along the ceiling throughout the station and there were concerns about disruption if they needed to be disconnected during the application process. We advised a simple application ‘hack’! Mask the electrical goods and simply spray over them, rather than brushing around them.
In between the arches, metal girders have been stripped back to bare metal and painted with zinc oxide, and the joints filled using expanding polyurethane foam. Both substrates are suitable to accept a direct coating of ThermalDry with no further preparation to the substrate necessary.
The work was done in such a way as to minimise disruption and keep the trains running.
