Wykamol’s Structural branch, Thor Helical Remedial, were approached by engineers Enterprise Mouchel and contractors Metcalfe Plant Hire to consult on specialist repairs on an M6 motorway bridge. The bridge in question is located at Junction 40 Penrith in Cumbria.
During the original construction of the motorway bridges the sandstone cladding was not adequately restrained to the reinforced concrete bridge abutments. As a result of this the stone cladding had started to pull away from the concrete behind.
Paul Shepherd, Technical Manager for Thor Helical, was contacted to suggest a restraint proposal for the 125mm thick sandstone cladding, which would enable it to be tied back onto the reinforced concrete.
Paul proposed the use of the 9mm Thor Helical CD Drive Fix Tie, and after extensive testing in conjunction with Enterprise Mouchel, approximately 4000 ties were installed to all the interchange bridges by Metcalfe Plant Hire. The use of this simple, efficient and rapidly installed remedial tie meant the project could be completed quickly, minimising disruption to the motorway traffic.
